BYOD trial: upgrading, adding devices and removing a trial

What happens when your 14-day BYOD trial ends, and how to keep, add or remove a BYOD device.

Written by Ryan Kulp

A BYOD trial runs one of your own devices on trmnl.com for 14 days, for $1. This article covers what comes after: the trial ending, buying a license, adding another device, and removing a trial device. To set up the trial device itself, see Registering your MAC address.

When the trial ends

  • Your dashboard shows a Free trial: N days left banner for the full 14 days.

  • About a day before the end, we email you a reminder.

  • Nothing is charged when it ends. The trial does not renew or turn into a paid license by itself.

  • After 14 days your device shows BYOD trial ended and checks in only once or twice a day.

  • If the trial device is the only device on your account, the dashboard opens the Your BYOD free trial has ended page until you upgrade, add a licensed device, or delete your account.

During the trial you can't publish plugins or recipes. That opens once you have a license.

There is no way to extend a trial from your account.

Keep your device: upgrade from the dashboard

This is the simplest path, and it needs no order number.

  1. Click Upgrade for $49 in the trial banner, or open the upgrade page.

  2. Pay $49. That is the $50 license less the $1 you paid for the trial.

Your trial device becomes a permanent BYOD device. Its MAC address, playlist and plugins stay as they are, so there is nothing to claim and nothing to re-enter.

Already bought a license from the shop?

A BYOD license from the shop is a new BYOD device. It does not convert your trial device, and the trial device's playlist does not move across. This is the step people miss most often.

The easy way: email support@trmnl.com with your order number and we'll move the license onto your trial device, playlist and all.

To do it yourself:

  1. Go to Claim a Device and enter your order number and the first name or email you used at checkout. You get a Friendly ID, also sent by email.

  2. Click your device name in the top-right of trmnl.com, click Add new device and enter the Friendly ID.

  3. Go to Account and click Delete trial device. Your $1 is refunded. Do this before the next step: a MAC address can belong to only one device, so the new device can't take it while the trial device still has it. This also deletes the trial device's playlist. Your plugins stay on your account, so you can add them to the new device's playlist afterwards. If you want the playlist kept, use the support route above instead.

  4. Click your device name in the top-right, click the gear icon next to your new BYOD device, open Developer Perks, enter your MAC address and save. Then restart your board.

The dashboard upgrade and a shop license are each a full license, so you only need one of them. If you paid for both, contact support.

Adding a second BYOD device

Each BYOD device needs its own license. The free trial is one per person: it isn't offered to an account that already has a BYOD device, trial or licensed, or to an email that has already had one.

So for a second device, buy another BYOD license ($50). An order with more than one license lets you claim that many devices. Claim each one at Claim a Device, add it with Add new device, then enter its MAC address under Developer Perks.

Only want the same screen on several devices? See Calculating BYOD and Dev Edition add-ons for options that need no extra license.

Removing a trial device

You can do this yourself on the Account page, before or after the trial ends. Either way your $1 is refunded.

  • You have other devices too: click Delete trial device. It deletes the trial device and its data. Your account and other devices stay as they are.

  • The trial device is your only device: click Delete my account & data. This deletes your whole account, the device and all its data. The same button is on the trial-ended page.

Once a device is upgraded to a license it is no longer a trial, and only support can remove it. Email support@trmnl.com with its Friendly ID.

Troubleshooting

I bought a license but my account still says free trial.
You bought it from the shop, so it waits as a separate device. Follow Already bought a license from the shop? above.

My new BYOD device won't save the MAC address.
Your trial device still has it. Delete the trial device first, then save the MAC address again.

I can't find Delete trial device.
It only shows while your account has a trial device. If you already upgraded, the device is licensed now; contact support to remove it.

My device says "MAC not registered".
See Registering your MAC address.
