Fleet is for anyone running multiple devices that should all show the same thing, like a company with a display in each department or a campus with multiple buildings.
Make one device the master, and set up its playlist like usual. Then you push, and every other device in the fleet gets a copy of that playlist. Fleet also shows you which devices missed a check-in, so you know which display needs a charge before somebody reports it.
Prerequisites
A TRMNL account
Two or more devices on that account
Step 1 - Install the Fleet app
Visit Apps and click Install next to Fleet. You can also get there from Account > Preferences > Explore Apps.
A TRMNL account can have one fleet. Fleet has three tabs on the left: Overview, Devices and Settings. To allow multiple people to manage your fleet, see account sharing.
Step 2 - Add your devices
Open the Devices tab. Under Add a device, check every device that should show the shared content, then click Add to fleet. Select all checks every device on the list.
A device can belong to one fleet. Devices you leave out keep their own playlists, which is handy for a display that shows something different, like the one in the provost's office.
Step 3 - Choose a master
Open the Settings tab. Under Master device, pick the device whose playlist the rest should copy, then click Set master. Any device on your account can be the master, including one you already added in Step 2.
Under Inherited settings, turn on each device setting the fleet should copy from the master on every push:
Refresh interval, how often each device checks in
Sleep schedule, the hours each device sleeps, and whether it shows a sleep screen
Orientation, landscape or portrait
Color palette, skipped on any device whose model can't show it
Click Save settings. Settings you leave off stay as they are on each device.
Step 4 - Push to your fleet
Build the master's playlist the way you would for any device: switch to the master from the device menu at the top of the page, then add plugins, recipes and mashups. When it looks right, open the Overview tab and click Push to fleet.
A push replaces the whole playlist on every device in the fleet. Anything added to a device's own playlist is gone after the next push, so make changes on the master. This is the step people miss most often.
Each device shows the new playlist the next time it checks in. Devices on a long refresh interval take longer.
Step 5 - You're done!
The Devices tab shows every device in the fleet with its next check-in, battery, Wi-Fi, firmware and model. Each one also has a badge:
In sync, the device has the master's current playlist
Needs push, the master's playlist changed after this device's last push
Never pushed, the device joined the fleet after the last push
To update one device without touching the rest, click Push on its row. Push to fleet on the Overview tab updates them all.
A device with the Different model badge is not the same model as the master. It gets the same playlist, but plugins can look different on its screen.
Check-ins
Fleet knows when each device should check in next, from its refresh interval and sleep schedule. The Overview tab counts the devices that missed that time, and lists them under Needs attention. A sleeping device never counts as overdue.
To get an email instead, open the Settings tab and turn on Email me when a device is overdue. Choose how late a device has to be (30 minutes, 1 hour or 4 hours), and who gets the email. Leave Send to blank to use your account email, or enter a shared inbox like your IT help desk. Click Save alerts.
We check every 15 minutes and send one email listing every overdue device. A device is reported once per outage, and again only after it checks in and goes quiet once more. Low battery and weak Wi-Fi are the usual reasons. A device with a healthy battery that went quiet is worth walking to.
To take a device out of the fleet, click Remove on its row. To stop using Fleet, click Uninstall at the bottom of the Settings tab. Either way, devices keep the playlist they last got.
Troubleshooting
"Could not add (device): already in a fleet or using legacy mirroring."
The device mirrors another device from its own settings. Open that device's settings, turn off Mirror, then add it again.
Push to fleet is missing from the Overview tab.
The fleet has no master. Set one on the Settings tab.
A device I want as master is not in the list.
It is the current master, or it mirrors another device from its own settings. Turn off Mirror on that device first.
Changes I made to a device's playlist disappeared.
A push replaces the playlist on every device in the fleet. Make the change on the master, then push.
A device shows the old playlist after a push.
It gets the new one at its next check-in. The Devices tab shows when that is.
A device's colors look wrong.
It is a different model from the master, and its screen may not show the master's colors. If Color palette is on under Inherited settings, the palette is skipped on models that can't show it.
A device is overdue but I got no email.
Check that alerts are on and saved under Settings, and that the device is late by more than the time you chose. A device is reported once per outage, so a device that stayed quiet since the last email is not reported again.
